Symptoms

Which function stopped?

With an IC fault, usually a single function stops completely or works on and off. The symptom points to which IC to check.

Not charging or very slow

The cable and port are fine, yet the phone will not charge or heats up while charging.

Sound comes and goes

No sound on calls, the speaker button is greyed out or recordings are silent.

Touch lags

The screen registers touch late, freezes now and then or taps by itself.

Wi-Fi will not turn on

The Wi-Fi switch stays grey or no networks appear at all.

No network

The SIM is in, but it says “No Service” or keeps searching.

No backlight

Sound and vibration work; with a torch the picture is faintly visible but there is no light.

How it works

How an IC repair works

  1. Free diagnosis

    Outside parts such as the port, screen and antenna are tested first; if the fault is on the board, the faulty IC is found by measurement.

  2. Approval

    The IC to be replaced, the scope of the work and the price are sent; since the work is on the board, the risks are explained too.

  3. Repair

    The faulty IC is removed from the board and a new one is soldered in. It is delicate work done on the board.

  4. Test and return

    The related function (charging, sound, Wi-Fi, network or touch) is tested separately; then the device is handed over or shipped.

Because an IC replacement is done on the board, the risk is a little higher; data is usually preserved, but you need to back up before the work starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

What does each IC do?

Every job on a phone board has its own IC. The faulty one is suspected from the symptom and confirmed by measurement.

Charging and power ICs

They accept the charge and distribute it to the battery. When they fail, the phone will not charge or heats up while charging.

Audio and touch ICs

They run the speaker, microphone and the circuit that senses touch. When they fail, sound cuts out or touch lags.

Wi-Fi and network ICs

They manage wireless networking and the cellular connection. When they fail, Wi-Fi will not turn on or the network keeps searching.

ICs are specific to each model; the part to be used is determined at diagnosis and sent to you with the price.

IC Chip Repair: frequently asked questions

How do I know it is an IC fault?

If a single function fails completely or on and off, and replacing the related part (port, speaker, antenna) did not help, an IC is suspected. Measurement on the board confirms it.

Not charging: the port or the IC?

The cable, adapter and charging port are tested first. If charging still fails after the port is cleaned or replaced, the charging IC is checked; parts that are not needed are not replaced.

Is a “No Service” error always an IC fault?

No. The SIM card, carrier settings, the antenna or IMEI registration can also be the cause; once these are ruled out, the network IC is checked.

The Wi-Fi switch on my iPhone is grey. What should I do?

You can first try resetting network settings; this removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords. If the switch stays grey, the Wi-Fi IC or its connection is checked.
