01Why does it start in a corner?

When a phone is dropped, the corners often hit first. Even if the glass does not break, the impact can damage the layers at the corner of the OLED panel below. Being bent in a tight pocket or pressure on the corner has the same effect. Pixels in the damaged area give no light, and a black patch forms.

02Software or screen?

Take a screenshot and open it on another device. If the black area is not in the image, the screen hardware is at fault. Restarting or updating does not fix hardware darkening.

Panel damage usually spreads, slowly or quickly; sometimes it covers much of the screen within days. If coloured lines or touch loss start around the black area, do not delay the repair.
