- The easiest way is Settings › [your name] › Sign-In & Security › Change Password on a signed-in iPhone.
- For this you need the iPhone’s own passcode (the screen lock code).
- Without a trusted device, use iforgot.apple.com or the Apple Support app on someone else’s device.
- If you cannot get verification codes, Apple’s account recovery can take a few days.
- Repair shops cannot unlock an Apple Account; the password can only be reset through Apple.
01Are the iCloud password and Apple Account the same?
Yes. You sign in to iCloud, the App Store and other Apple services with the same Apple Account. What we call the “iCloud password” is this account’s password. Apple now calls what used to be the Apple ID an Apple Account; your email address and password stay the same.
02Method 1: Resetting from your iPhone
If you have a signed-in iPhone or iPad, this is the recommended way.
- Open Settings. Tap your name at the top.
- Go to Sign-In & Security.
- Tap Change Password. Enter the iPhone’s passcode (the screen lock code).
- Set a new password. Follow the onscreen steps.
Menu names may differ slightly between iOS versions.
03Method 2: From another device or the web
- Someone else’s device. In the Apple Support app on a friend’s iPhone, use Reset Password › Help Someone Else to reset your own account.
- Web. Go to iforgot.apple.com, enter your Apple Account email or phone number and follow the steps. This can take longer than resetting on a trusted device.
- Mac. System Settings › [your name] › Sign-In & Security › Change Password.
04Method 3: Account recovery
If you cannot reset the password and cannot get verification codes, Apple’s account recovery process starts. Depending on the information you can provide to verify your identity, it can take a few days or longer.
| Your situation | Route |
|---|---|
| You have a signed-in iPhone | Change Password in Settings |
| No trusted device, but you have your number | Apple Support app or iforgot.apple.com |
| You cannot get codes | Account recovery |
05If the screen does not work
You need a working screen to reset the password from the phone. If the screen is broken or shows nothing, it may need repairing first; data is usually preserved during the repair, but back up your data first. Choose your model on our iPhone models page, or see all repair types.
