How to tell if a phone’s screen has been replaced: buying second-hand

You can tell whether a second-hand phone’s screen has been replaced from a few signs: a gap or excess adhesive at the edge, tool marks on screws, dust around the front camera and colours that differ from the same model. On iPhone, Parts and Service History can show it too. A good replacement may leave no trace.

Key points
  • Look for a gap or excess adhesive at the edge.
  • Look for tool marks on visible screws.
  • Check for dust around the front camera and sensors.
  • Compare colour and touch with the same model.
  • On iPhone, check Parts and Service History.

01Signs to look for from outside

SignWhat it may tell you
A gap or step at the edgeThe screen may have been re-bonded
Excess adhesive at the edgeThe screen may have been removed and refitted
Tool marks on screwsThe phone may have been opened
Dust around the front camera and sensorsThe screen may have been opened and closed
Signs of force at the joinsThe body or cover may have been opened

02Comparison and settings

  1. Compare side by side. Compare brightness, colour and touch sensitivity with a phone of the same model; with a low-quality screen the difference stands out.
  2. Parts history on iPhone. On supported models, Parts and Service History under Settings › General › About can show a replaced screen; details are in how to tell if an iPhone has been repaired.
  3. Ask for documents. Ask the seller for any repair invoice or service record.

A well-done repair may leave none of these signs; the tests are not conclusive.

03When buying second-hand

A replaced screen is not a problem in itself; what matters is the type of part fitted. The difference between screen types is in aftermarket, used and original screens, and what to watch when buying and selling in Kadıköy in buying and selling used phones in Kadıköy.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Can you be sure a phone’s screen has been replaced?

Not always; a well-done replacement may leave no trace. The signs and a comparison give a good idea.

02

Where can I see on an iPhone that the screen was replaced?

On supported models, in Parts and Service History under Settings › General › About.

03

Is it a problem to buy a phone with a replaced screen?

Not in itself; check the type of part fitted and that the screen works properly.

04

Will a screen replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
