How to tell if the inner screen is broken: signs and simple tests

Inner screen damage means the panel under the glass is broken, even if the glass looks intact. Black or purple stains, coloured lines, part of the picture missing and touch failing in one area are the most common signs. With cracked outer glass, the picture usually stays sharp.

01Inner screen versus outer glass

A phone screen has protective glass on top and the panel that makes the picture underneath. When the outer glass breaks, you see cracks but the picture is usually fine. When the inner screen (panel) breaks, the picture is damaged even if the glass looks intact. Sometimes both break together.

02Signs of a broken inner screen

  • A black, purple or green stain spreading from a corner or crack.
  • Coloured lines running across the screen.
  • Part of the picture missing entirely.
  • Touch not responding in one area.
  • Sound and vibration but a completely dark screen.

03Simple tests at home

  1. White screen. Open a completely white image; stains and shadows stand out on white.
  2. Black screen. Open a black image in a dark room; glowing dots or lines point to a panel fault.
  3. Touch. Drag an app icon to every corner of the screen; where it sticks points to a touch fault.
