Is there a setting to turn the iPhone proximity sensor on or off?

iPhone has no setting to turn the proximity sensor on or off; it works automatically during calls. The setting related to waking the screen is “Raise to Wake”. If the sensor causes problems, the cause is usually a protector, a case or dirt.

Key points
  • iPhone has no setting to turn off the proximity sensor.
  • The sensor turns the screen off only when the phone is close to your face during calls and in some apps.
  • Settings › Display & Brightness › Raise to Wake turns the screen on when you lift the phone; it is not related to the sensor.
  • If the screen stays dark during calls, check the protector, the case and the top of the screen.
  • Sensor problems that start after a screen replacement need a service check.

01How does the iPhone proximity sensor work?

The proximity sensor sits at the top of the screen, in the same area as the front camera and earpiece. During a call it turns the screen off when you hold the phone to your ear and on again when you move it away, so your cheek does not end the call. There is no user setting for this.

02The Raise to Wake setting

This setting turns the screen on when you pick up the phone. You can switch it on or off in Settings › Display & Brightness. It does not affect the proximity sensor; the screen going dark during calls is separate.

03If the screen does not come back on during calls

  1. Remove the protector and case. Protectors that cover the sensor area are the most common cause.
  2. Clean the top of the screen. Use a dry, soft cloth.
  3. Restart the iPhone.
  4. Update iOS. Settings › General › Software Update.
  5. Turn on speakerphone. The sensor is disabled on speakerphone or Bluetooth earphones; this is a temporary workaround.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
