iPhone side button not working: side versus volume buttons and a workaround

On iPhones with Face ID, the side button on the right turns the phone on and off and also handles Siri, Apple Pay and force restarts. If the side button does not press, AssistiveTouch lets you lock and restart from the screen. The lasting fix is replacing the button or the cable underneath.

When the side button fails, all of these are affected, so a workaround helps.

02Workaround: AssistiveTouch

  1. Open Settings › Accessibility › Touch › AssistiveTouch.
  2. Customise the menu. Add “Lock Screen” and “Restart” to the on-screen button.
  3. Use it. Lock and restart from the on-screen button without pressing the side button.

Menu names can differ slightly by iOS version.

03Side button or volume button?

The side button and volume buttons may sit on separate cables (flex); a fault in one may not affect the other. Each button is tested separately at diagnosis. How do I switch off my iPhone if the side button does not work?

Use Settings › General › Shut Down, or switch it off from the AssistiveTouch menu.

The side button presses by itself. Why?

A case may be pressing on it, or the button cable is faulty. Try without the case first.

Are the side and volume buttons replaced together?

Not unless needed; each button is tested separately. On some models they share a cable and may be replaced together.

Will a button replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).
