- On OLED iPhones a keyboard shadow can be temporary or permanent.
- If it fades in a few minutes, it is temporary image retention.
- LCD iPhones do not get burn-in; the shadow has another cause.
- Dark Appearance and a short Auto-Lock delay burn-in.
- With permanent burn-in, the fix is a screen replacement.
01Temporary or permanent?
- Open a grey image. Show a plain grey image full screen at maximum brightness.
- Wait. Show other content for a few minutes, then look again.
- Compare. If the shadow has gone, it was temporary retention; if not, it is burn-in.
02Why does the screen type matter?
| Screen | Keyboard shadow | Likely cause |
|---|---|---|
| OLED (e.g. X and later Pro models) | Possible | Temporary retention or burn-in |
| LCD (e.g. XR, 11, SE) | No burn-in | Pressure mark, panel damage |
If an LCD iPhone shows a shadow in the keyboard area, the screen may have been pressed or the panel damaged. You can find your screen type in your model’s tech specs.
03Prevention settings
- Dark Appearance: Turn it on under Settings › Display & Brightness.
- Auto-Lock: Choose a short time so the screen does not stay on idle.
- Brightness: Do not leave a still image at full brightness for long.
