Phone screen flashing and will not turn on: step by step on Android

If an Android phone’s screen flashes during start-up and will not turn on, charge it for half an hour and force restart it first. If it starts, use safe mode to see whether an app is the cause. In recovery mode, do not choose “wipe data” without a backup; that option resets the phone.

Key points
  • Charge for half an hour and force restart first.
  • If it starts, rule out apps in safe mode.
  • In recovery mode, “wipe data” resets the phone; take care.
  • A worn battery can make the screen flash at start-up.
  • If it continues, the battery or board is checked.

011. Charge and force restart

  1. Charge it. Leave it on charge for at least half an hour with a sound cable and adapter.
  2. Force restart. On Samsung, hold volume down and the side button together until the phone restarts; on other brands, holding the power button usually works.

Button combinations can vary by manufacturer and model.

022. If it starts: safe mode

Safe mode starts with system apps only. If the screen behaves in safe mode, a recently installed app is causing the problem; remove apps one at a time to find it. You usually enter safe mode by long-pressing “Power off” in the power menu.

033. Take care in recovery mode

Some guides suggest the “wipe data / factory reset” option in recovery mode. This option erases everything on the phone; without a backup, do not choose it and get a diagnosis first.

044. If hardware is suspected

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

How do I force restart a Samsung phone?

Hold volume down and the side button together until the phone restarts.

02

Are “wipe cache” and “wipe data” the same in recovery mode?

No. Wiping the cache does not touch personal data; wiping data resets the phone. If unsure, choose neither.

03

The phone turns on when charging but shuts off when unplugged. Why?

The battery may be worn; it is checked at the free diagnosis.

04

Will the repair delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
