What is the fix for a swollen battery, and will it go down?

A swollen battery does not go back down by itself; the only safe fix is replacing it. When you notice swelling, stop charging, turn the phone off and do not press on the battery.

Key points
  • Battery swelling does not reverse; the fix is a battery replacement.
  • When you notice swelling, unplug the phone and turn it off.
  • Do not puncture, press or heat a swollen battery; it can catch fire.
  • The most common causes are ageing, heat and unsuitable chargers.
  • Back up your data before the repair; diagnosis is free.

01Why do batteries swell?

Gas can build up inside lithium batteries over time. The gas swells the battery pouch and pushes on the back cover or the screen.

  • Ageing. Common in batteries used for a long time.
  • Heat. Phones charged in the sun, in a car or under a pillow.
  • Unsuitable chargers. Poor-quality adapters and cables.
  • Knocks and liquid. The battery’s inner structure can be damaged.

02What to do when you notice swelling

  1. Unplug it. Do not keep charging a swollen battery.
  2. Turn the phone off. Keep the battery from heating further.
  3. Put it somewhere cool and safe. Keep it away from flammable things.
  4. Back up your data. If the phone turns on, back up first.
  5. Get the battery replaced. Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, back up your data before the repair.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
