- The proximity sensor darkens the screen during calls.
- There is no option to turn it off on iPhone.
- A screen protector or dirt can block the sensor.
- Some Android models have related options in settings.
- If the problem continues, the sensor or screen part is checked.
01Why do people want to turn it off?
| Problem | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Screen goes dark during a call and will not come back | A protector or dirt is blocking the sensor |
| Screen does not go dark, your ear presses buttons | The sensor is not detecting; part or screen problem |
| Screen goes dark at random | A case is covering the sensor |
02Try this before turning it off
- Check the protector. A thick protector without a cut-out over the sensor can make it always read “near”.
- Clean it. Wipe the top of the screen with a soft, dry cloth.
- Remove the case. A case wrapping the top edge can cover the sensor.
- Restart. A temporary software glitch can affect the sensor.
03iPhone and Android
- iPhone: There is no option to turn off the proximity sensor. If the problem continues, the sensor or the part attached to the screen should be checked.
- Android: Some models have options such as pocket mode or accidental touch protection; menu names vary by model. Ways to turn it off are in how to turn off the proximity sensor.
For sensor problems that start after a screen replacement, we check whether the part attached to the screen was moved across correctly. For screen options, see our screen replacement page.
