WhatsApp video call problems on iPhone: how to fix them

If WhatsApp video calls on your iPhone will not connect, drop, or send no picture or sound, the cause is usually a permission, the network or a saving setting. If settings do not help and the camera or microphone also fails in other apps, the hardware should be checked.

01Check the permissions first

  1. WhatsApp permissions. In Settings › WhatsApp, Camera and Microphone should be on.
  2. Cellular data permission. On the same screen, Cellular Data should be on; if off, WhatsApp only works on Wi-Fi.
  3. Screen Time restrictions. If Screen Time is on, make sure camera and microphone access are not blocked in Content & Privacy Restrictions.

02Network and saving settings

  • Change network. Video calls use far more data than voice calls. If Wi-Fi is weak, switch to cellular, and vice versa.
  • Turn off Low Data Mode. It is in Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data Options, or in the Wi-Fi network details.
  • Turn off Low Power Mode. It is in Settings › Battery and limits background activity.
  • Background App Refresh. Keeping it on in Settings › WhatsApp helps incoming calls arrive on time.
  • WhatsApp data setting. The option in WhatsApp’s own settings to use less data for calls can lower quality; turn it off and test if you have problems.

03Update and restart

  1. Update WhatsApp. Check the App Store for updates.
  2. Update iOS. Settings › General › Software Update.
  3. Restart the iPhone.
  4. Last resort: reinstall. Before deleting WhatsApp, make sure your chat backup is up to date.

04If the camera or microphone does not work

If the front camera does not open in the Camera app either, or your voice is not recorded in a voice note, the problem is the hardware, not WhatsApp. Choose your model on our iPhone models page and ask about a camera or microphone repair, or see all repair types.
