Aftermarket versus original (OEM) screens: why the terms get confusing

Sellers use the word “OEM” in different ways: some mean the original part, others a compatible copy. So when buying a screen, look at concrete facts rather than labels: the panel type, whether features such as the fingerprint sensor and True Tone on iPhone will work, and what the invoice says.

Cep Market Repair TeamIn Kadıköy since 2006
Key points
  • Sellers can use “OEM” to mean original or compatible.
  • Labels like “A quality” or “AAA” have no common standard.
  • Always ask about the panel type (OLED or LCD).
  • Ask about features such as the fingerprint sensor and True Tone on iPhone.
  • Ask for the part type to be written on the invoice.

01Why do the terms get confusing?

TermCommon meaning
OriginalThe device manufacturer’s part
OEMIn English, the maker’s part; in Turkish repair shops often a compatible part
Aftermarket / compatibleA compatible part made outside the manufacturer
RefurbishedAn original panel with new glass
PulledAn original part removed from another device

The same word can describe a different part at different sellers. At Cep Market, OEM means a compatible part made outside the manufacturer.

02Questions to ask when buying a screen

  1. What is the panel type? A phone with an OLED original can be fitted with an LCD compatible; colour and brightness will differ.
  2. Will the fingerprint sensor work? On in-display fingerprint models the screen type matters.
  3. Sensors, and True Tone on iPhone? Some features may not work depending on the part.
  4. What will the invoice say? Ask for the part type to be written.

The detailed differences between screen types are in aftermarket, used and original screens, and the options on our screen replacement page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Is an OEM screen original?

It depends on the seller. At Cep Market, OEM means a compatible screen made outside the manufacturer.

02

Are aftermarket and OEM screens the same?

In repair shops they are often used for the same thing. To be sure, ask about the panel type and features.

03

How do I know which screen was fitted?

Ask before the repair and ask for the part type to be written on the invoice.

04

Will a screen replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
