How long does an aftermarket screen last? What decides its life

How long an aftermarket (OEM, compatible) screen lasts cannot be given as one figure; it depends on the part quality, the panel type and how it is used. Heat, high brightness and knocks shorten its life. When choosing a screen, always ask about the part type and the difference.

Key points
  • There is no single lifespan; quality and use decide it.
  • The panel type (LCD or OLED) affects durability.
  • Heat, constant high brightness and knocks shorten its life.
  • Fading colours and sticky touch are early signs.
  • Ask about the part type before the repair.

01What is an aftermarket screen?

An aftermarket or compatible screen is made outside the phone’s manufacturer and fits your model; repair shops also call it an OEM screen. Quality varies from maker to maker. Some compatible screens come with a different panel type from the original (for example LCD instead of OLED). The differences between types are in aftermarket, used and original screens.

02What decides its life?

FactorEffect
Panel qualityEven compatible screens for the same model can differ
Panel typeLCD and OLED wear in different ways
HeatA phone that keeps heating up wears the panel faster
BrightnessLong periods at full brightness shorten its life
KnocksDrops affect the glass and the panel together

03Early signs of wear

  • Colours fading or the screen turning yellowish.
  • Light bleeding or shadows at the edges.
  • Touch sticking in some areas.
  • Brightness looking lower than before.

If these signs start, have the screen checked; problems caught early can be fixed before they spread to other parts.

04Making a screen last longer

  1. Protect it from heat. Avoid heavy use in the sun and while charging.
  2. Auto-brightness. Turn on auto-brightness rather than staying at full brightness.
  3. Use protection. A case and screen protector reduce knocks reaching the panel.
  4. Ask about the part. Before the repair, find out which screen will be fitted and how it differs.

You can find the screen options on our screen replacement page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

How many months does an aftermarket screen last?

There is no single figure. The part quality, panel type and use decide its life.

02

Does an aftermarket screen feel different to touch?

It can. Touch feel and brightness on compatible screens can differ from the original; we explain the difference before approval.

03

How do I know which screen is fitted?

Ask before the repair. At Cep Market the part options and how they differ are explained, and the replaced part is invoiced in your name.

04

Will a screen replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
