Black lines on my phone screen: the screenshot test

If black lines appear on your phone screen, take a screenshot first: if the lines are not in the image, the problem is the screen itself. Black lines are often rows of dead pixels in the panel after a drop or pressure; they do not go away by themselves and can multiply.

01Start with the screenshot test

This test separates a screen fault from a software one.

  1. Take a screenshot. Capture the screen while the line is visible.
  2. Open it elsewhere. Send the image to yourself and open it on a computer or another phone.
  3. Compare. If the line is not in the image, the screen hardware is at fault; if it is, an app or the software may be the cause.

02Why do black lines appear?

A screen panel is made of pixels arranged in rows and columns. If a drop, being squeezed in a pocket or pressing on the screen damages the circuit that drives a row, that row stays black. 03What to do

  • Restart the phone and keep the software up to date.
  • Do not press on the screen; pressure can make the line grow.
  • If lines multiply or touch is affected, do not delay the repair.
