Blown phone speaker: problem and fix

If your phone speaker sounds crackly, muffled or very quiet, it may be “blown”. But not always: a blocked grille or a setting can cause the same symptoms. Do the simple checks first; if the speaker is damaged, it needs replacing.

01How do you know the speaker is blown?

  • Crackling and popping. The sound distorts, especially at high volume.
  • Muffled or quiet sound. It sounds far away.
  • No sound at all. Ringtones, alarms and music are silent on the speaker.
  • One speaker silent. On a phone with two speakers, one does not work.

02Try these first

  1. Clean the grille. Gently remove dust from the speaker grille with a dry, soft brush.
  2. Remove the case. The case may be covering the speaker opening.
  3. Test different sources. Compare ringtone, music and video.
  4. Listen with headphones. If headphones sound clean, the speaker is the problem.
  5. Turn off Bluetooth and restart. The sound may be going to another device.

Will a blown speaker fix itself?

No. A speaker with a damaged membrane does not recover; it needs replacing. If the cause is dirt, cleaning may be enough.

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

Water got into the speaker. What should I do?

Turn the phone off, do not charge it and contact a service without waiting for it to dry. Liquid can affect the speaker and the board.
