- A phone that “won’t turn on” differs from one with “no picture”: the first needs repair first.
- An iPhone can be backed up if plugged into a computer it trusted before.
- On Android, screen mirroring works if USB debugging was turned on earlier.
- If there is a picture but touch fails, connecting a mouse via USB-C or OTG may help.
- If cloud backup is on (iCloud on iPhone, Google on Android), your data is already safe.
01Does the phone turn on, or is it just the screen?
If the phone vibrates, rings or makes a sound when connected to a computer, it is on; the problem is the screen. If there is no response at all, there is a power, battery or board fault, and repair comes first. See our guide on a phone that works but shows a black screen.
02On iPhone
- Computer backup. If the iPhone trusted this computer before, it appears in Finder on a Mac or in Apple Devices / iTunes on Windows, and you can back it up.
- iCloud. If iCloud Backup or Photos is on, your data is already in iCloud.
- On a computer it has not trusted before, the “Trust this computer” prompt cannot be confirmed without a screen.
03On Android
- Screen mirroring. If USB debugging was turned on earlier, screen mirroring tools on a computer let you use the phone with a mouse.
- Connecting a mouse. If there is a picture but touch does not work, connect a mouse with a USB-C / OTG adapter to unlock the phone.
- Google backup. If backup is on in your Google account, contacts, photos and settings are there.
| Situation | Route to your data |
|---|---|
| Screen black, phone on, computer recognised it before | Computer backup |
| Picture works, touch does not | Unlock with a mouse |
| Cloud backup on | iCloud on iPhone, Google on Android |
| The phone does not turn on at all | Repair first |
04If repair comes first
Data is usually preserved during the repair, but back up your data first; once the screen is fixed, you reach your data normally. Choose your model on our Samsung models or iPhone models page.
