How to get photos off a phone that will not turn on: check the cloud first

If your phone will not turn on, your photos may already be backed up elsewhere: with iCloud Photos on iPhone or Google Photos on Android, you can reach them from a computer. If there is a memory card, read it in another device. If they are not in the cloud, the phone has to start again to reach them.

  • Memory card: If the phone has a card, remove it and open it on a computer with a card reader.
  • Messaging backups: A chat app’s cloud backup may hold photos you sent and received; they appear when you restore to a new phone.

033. If the phone turns on but the screen does not

If the phone vibrates or rings but the screen stays dark, connect it to a computer and try transferring the photos. If the phone has trusted that computer before, a transfer is often possible; if not, the screen needs repairing.

044. If it does not turn on at all
