Can you recover data from a phone that won’t turn on?

For photos and contacts on a phone that will not turn on, check your cloud backup first: iCloud on iPhone, your Google account on Android. Data on today’s phones is encrypted, so it cannot be read by removing the chip; the phone must start with its own board and passcode. So recovery usually means repair.

02What should you do?

  1. Check backups. From another device, sign in to iCloud for an iPhone or to your Google account for an Android phone.
  2. Charge it. Leave it charging for a while with another cable and adapter.
  3. Force restart. Try the button combination for your model.
  4. Do not reset. Restoring in recovery mode can erase data.
  5. Remember the passcode. After the repair you reach the data with your passcode.
