How to tell your iPhone battery is failing: a Battery Health guide

The easiest way to see your iPhone battery’s condition is the Settings › Battery › Battery Health screen. If it shows a “Service” recommendation, or the phone shuts down by itself while showing charge, a battery replacement may be needed. A performance management message is also a sign of a worn battery.

01What does the Battery Health screen show?

  1. Open Settings › Battery › Battery Health (the menu name can vary slightly by iOS version).
  2. Maximum Capacity. How much charge the battery holds now compared with when it was new.
  3. Peak Performance Capability. Whether the battery can supply the power the phone needs.
  4. Service recommendation. If the battery is clearly worn, an information message appears on this screen.
