How to tell when a phone battery is worn out

Everyday use usually shows when a battery is worn out: the charge drains fast, the phone shuts down unexpectedly or the battery swells. On iPhone you can see battery health in settings; on Android, depending on the brand, you use settings, a diagnostics app or a service code.

01Signs a battery is worn out

  • Fast drain. With the same use, you need to charge much sooner than before.
  • Sudden shutdowns. The phone turns off at around 20–30 percent or in the cold.
  • Slowdowns. Some phones limit performance with a worn battery.
  • Swelling. The back cover or screen edge is lifting.
  • Heat while charging. The phone gets hotter than usual when charging.

It depends on use, charging habits and heat. It is better to look at the signs and the battery health value than at a number of years.

As a general guide, below 80 percent is a sign to consider a replacement. If it shuts down suddenly or swells, replace it whatever the value.

Will a battery replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).
