How to tell if a phone has a motherboard fault

The motherboard is the main board that carries the phone’s processor, storage and all connections. If the phone does not turn on, keeps restarting or shows faults that remain after parts are replaced, the motherboard should be checked. Simpler causes such as the battery and screen are ruled out first.

01Signs of a motherboard fault

  • It does not turn on. No light, vibration or sound even on the charger.
  • It keeps restarting. It stays on the logo or turns on and off.
  • Overheating. One area gets hot even when the phone is not in use.
  • Several functions failed at once. For example sound, camera and Wi-Fi together.
  • No IMEI. Dialling *#06# shows no IMEI and there is no network.

02Rule out the simple causes first

  1. Charge and wait. If the battery is completely flat, the phone may not start straight away.
  2. Try another cable and adapter.
  3. Force restart. Use the right button combination for your model.
  4. Check the screen. If there is vibration or sound, the phone is on and the screen may be the problem.
