How to find your phone’s model: iPhone, Samsung and Android

The easiest way to find your phone’s model is the About section in Settings. If the phone does not turn on, the box, the invoice, the SIM tray or the IMEI number can also tell you. Below are the steps by brand and the difference between a model name and a model number.

Key points
  • On iPhone: Settings › General › About › Model Name.
  • On Samsung and most Android phones: Settings › About phone.
  • The model name (e.g. Galaxy S24) and model number (e.g. SM-…) are different; both help with parts and accessories.
  • If the phone does not turn on, check the box, the invoice or an IMEI lookup.
  • When asking for a repair quote, the model name is enough.

01Model name vs model number

The model name is the name the phone is sold under: iPhone 15, Galaxy A55, Redmi Note 13. The model number is the manufacturer’s internal code: a number starting with A on iPhone, a code starting with SM- on Samsung. One model name can have several model numbers for different countries. The model name is enough for a case or screen protector; the model number also helps when choosing spare parts.

02Finding your iPhone model

  1. Open Settings. Go to General › About.
  2. Look at Model Name. Your phone’s name is shown here.
  3. See the model number. Tap the Model Number line to see the number starting with A.

If the phone does not turn on, on iPhone 8 and later remove the SIM tray; the model number is printed inside the slot. On older iPhones it is on the back cover.

03Samsung and other Android phones

  • Samsung: Settings › About phone. The model name and the model number starting with SM- appear here.
  • Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO: the device name is under Settings › About phone.
  • Other brands: Settings › About phone or System › About.

Menu names can differ slightly between software versions. Typing “about” into the settings search finds the right section on most phones.

04If the phone does not turn on

WhereWhat it shows
BoxModel name and often the model number
InvoiceModel name
iPhone SIM tray or back coverModel number starting with A
IMEI lookupRegistered brand and model

The IMEI number is printed on the box and the invoice. If the phone turns on, you can also dial *#06# to see it. In Turkey, entering it into the IMEI lookup on e-Devlet shows the device’s registered brand and model.

05After you find your model

When asking for a repair quote, just send the model name and the fault. Choose your model on our iPhone models or Samsung models page to see the repair list.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

How can I find my phone’s model without the box?

Check About phone in Settings (General › About on iPhone). If the phone does not turn on, use the invoice or an IMEI lookup.

02

Is the model number the same as the IMEI?

No. The model number is shared by all phones of the same model; the IMEI is unique to each phone.

03

How do I know which iPhone I have?

Look at the Model Name line in Settings › General › About. If the phone does not turn on, look up the number starting with A from the SIM tray in Apple’s model list.

04

Do you need the model number for a repair quote?

The model name is usually enough. If needed, we check the model number during diagnosis.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
