Ink spreading on the phone screen: cause and fix

A black, purple or dark blue stain spreading across the screen is known as “ink spreading” and shows that the display panel is damaged. The stain does not go away by itself and often grows; the fix is a screen replacement.

01Why does ink spread on the screen?

When the layers inside the display panel crack from a drop, a knock or pressure, the part that creates the picture is damaged. The damaged area shows as a black, purple or dark blue stain and can spread along the cracks. Sitting on the phone in a back pocket or crushing it in a bag has the same effect.

02Signs

  • A spreading dark stain. It starts at a corner or a crack and grows.
  • Coloured lines. Lines or colour problems around the stain.
  • Lost touch. Touches are not detected where the stain is.
  • A fully black screen. As the stain grows, the picture can disappear completely.

03The fix: a screen replacement

Will the ink stain on the screen go away?

No. The stain comes from panel damage; it does not go away and can grow. The fix is a screen replacement.

Will I lose my data if ink spreads on the screen?

No. The stain affects the picture, not the storage. Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

Is replacing only the front glass enough?

No. Ink spreading is damage to the panel under the glass; the whole screen must be replaced.
