iPhone front camera not working: what to do

If you see a black screen when switching to the front camera, or the camera will not open, check the software side first. Closing and reopening the app and restarting the iPhone are usually enough. If the problem continues, the front camera module should be checked.

01Step-by-step fix

  1. Close the Camera app. Swipe it away in the app switcher and open it again.
  2. Switch cameras. Switch to the rear camera and back to the front.
  3. Restart the iPhone.
  4. Update iOS. Settings › General › Software Update.
  5. Check restrictions. If Screen Time is on, Camera should be on in Content & Privacy Restrictions › Allowed Apps.
  6. Check the app permission. If it fails in one app only, allow Camera in Settings › [app].
