iPhone not ringing when someone calls: what to do

If calls come in on your iPhone but it does not ring, the cause is usually silent mode, a Focus left on or a low ringer volume. Silence Unknown Callers and a connected Bluetooth device can also stop the ringtone being heard.

  • First check that silent mode is off: the ring / silent switch, or the Action button on newer models.
  • Check Control Centre for a Focus mode (Do Not Disturb, Sleep) that is on.
  • Turn up the ringer volume in Settings › Sounds & Haptics.
  • With Silence Unknown Callers on, numbers not in your contacts will not ring.
  • If there is no sound from the speaker at all, the speaker should be checked.

01Step-by-step fix

  1. Turn off silent mode. Set the ring / silent switch to ring; on models with an Action button, turn off silent mode with the Action button or Control Centre.
  2. Check Focus. If a Focus is on in Control Centre, turn it off; also check scheduled Focus modes.
  3. Turn up the ringer volume. Raise Ringtone and Alerts in Settings › Sounds & Haptics.
  4. Check the ringtone. Make sure the selected ringtone is not “None”.
  5. Unknown callers. If Settings › Phone › Silence Unknown Callers is on, numbers not in your contacts do not ring.
  6. Turn off Bluetooth. The ringtone may be going to connected earphones or a car.
  7. Check blocked contacts. If one person’s calls do not ring, they may be blocked.
