- Dimming is usually caused by a setting such as Auto-Brightness.
- With “Reduce White Point” on, the screen looks dim even at full brightness.
- An iPhone lowers brightness by itself when it gets hot.
- The screen going dark during calls is the proximity sensor doing its job.
- If it is dark at full brightness, the screen or a sensor may be faulty.
01Check the settings first
- Brightness. Turn brightness all the way up in Control Centre.
- Auto-Brightness. Turn it off in Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size and test.
- Reduce White Point. Turn it off in the same menu if it is on.
- Zoom filter. If Accessibility › Zoom is on, check its filter.
- Heat. If the phone is hot, let it cool; brightness comes back by itself.
Menu names vary by iOS version.
