- Check the audio output in Control Center first.
- A connected Bluetooth device may be taking the sound.
- Lint or moisture in the port makes it think headphones are in.
- Call Audio Routing should be “Automatic”.
- If the port is clean and it continues, the port or board is checked.
011. Where is the sound going?
- Open Control Center. Tap the audio output (AirPlay) icon in the music panel.
- Choose iPhone. If headphones or a speaker are selected in the list, choose iPhone.
- Turn off Bluetooth. If headphones or a car are connected, the sound goes there.
022. Clean the port
On older iPhones with a headphone jack, and on newer models with a Lightning or USB-C port, a dirty port can make the phone think headphones are connected.
- Look into the port with a torch; remove any lint gently with a wooden toothpick.
- If it got wet, wait for it to dry; do not plug in a cable.
- Plugging headphones in and out can sometimes reset detection.
033. Call audio routing
Settings › Accessibility › Touch › Call Audio Routing should be set to “Automatic”. If “Headset” is selected, calls do not go to the speaker. Menu names can differ slightly by iOS version.
04If it continues
If the settings are right and the port is clean but the iPhone stays in headphone mode, the port, bottom cable or audio circuit may be faulty. Steps for all phones are in phone stuck in headphone mode, and audio faults on the board on our IC chip repair page.
