Phone stuck in headphone mode: how to get it out

If your phone still shows the headphone icon after you unplug the headphones and no sound comes from the speaker, it is stuck in headphone mode. A restart, a Bluetooth check or cleaning the port usually solves it; after liquid contact, the port may need replacing.

Key points
  • First plug and unplug the headphones a few times and restart the phone.
  • A Bluetooth headset or speaker may be taking the audio; turn Bluetooth off and test.
  • Dust in the headphone or charging port can make the phone think headphones are connected.
  • Do not poke the port with metal; use a soft, dry brush.
  • If the problem started after liquid contact, the port may be oxidised.

01Why does a phone get stuck in headphone mode?

The phone uses a small detector to tell whether headphones are plugged in. If the detector gives a false signal, the phone thinks headphones are connected and does not send sound to the speaker.

  • Dust and lint. Lint from a pocket or dust can press on the detector.
  • A Bluetooth connection. A car system or wireless earphones can take the audio.
  • A software hang. The phone may not update its state when the headphones are removed.
  • Oxidation. Moisture or liquid can damage the contacts in the port.
  • Adapters and USB-C audio. On phones without a headphone jack, dirt in the charging port or an adapter can cause the same symptom.

02Step-by-step fix

  1. Plug and unplug the headphones. Doing this a few times can free the detector.
  2. Restart the phone. Software hangs are often fixed this way.
  3. Turn off Bluetooth. If the audio is going to another device, this shows it at once. On iPhone, also check the audio output in Control Centre.
  4. Clean the port. Turn the phone off and gently clean the headphone or charging port with a soft, dry brush.
  5. Check for updates. Install any pending software update.
  6. Last resort: reset. If nothing else works and you suspect software, you could back up and restore factory settings.

03Headphone mode after liquid contact

If the phone got stuck in headphone mode after getting wet, the contacts in the port may be oxidised. Cleaning is usually not enough; the port needs replacing or the oxidation on the board needs cleaning.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Will the phone leave headphone mode by itself?

With a software hang, a restart fixes it. If there is dust or oxidation, the problem stays until the port is cleaned or replaced.

02

Can I clean the headphone port myself?

With the phone off, you can gently clean it with a soft, dry brush. Do not use metal objects or liquids.

03

Will a factory reset fix it?

Only if the problem is software, and it erases all your data. It does not help with hardware problems, so try the other steps first.

04

Will replacing the port delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility). We still recommend backing up before you hand the phone in.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
