iPhone fingerprint problem: what to do if Touch ID sometimes fails

If Touch ID recognises your fingerprint only some of the time, the cause is usually your finger: wet, very dry, cold or cut skin makes reading harder. Registering the same finger a second time can help. The iPhone also asks for your passcode after a restart, for security; that is not a fault.

Key points
  • Wet, dry or cold skin makes reading harder.
  • Wipe the button with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Registering the same finger twice can help recognition.
  • Being asked for the passcode after a restart is normal.
  • If no finger is recognised, the button is checked.

01Why it fails to recognise

CauseWhat to do
Wet or sweaty fingerDry your finger
Very dry or cold skinWarm your hands; after moisturiser, let the skin dry
A cut or plasterUse another registered finger
Dirt or grease on the buttonWipe the button with a dry, lint-free cloth
A case covering the area around the buttonRemove the case and try

02Improving recognition

  1. Register the same finger twice. In Settings › Touch ID & Passcode, add the finger you use most as a second entry.
  2. Include the edges. In the second stage of registration, touch the edges of your finger to the button.
  3. Check the use switches. In the same section, make sure Touch ID is turned on for unlocking, Apple Pay and the App Store.

If the fingerprint will not register at all, see iPhone Touch ID setup could not complete.

03When is the passcode required?

The iPhone asks for the passcode after a restart, when it has not been unlocked for a long time and after several failed attempts, for security. Just enter the passcode; it is not a fault. If no finger is recognised, or it began after the button was replaced, see unable to activate Touch ID on this iPhone.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
