iPhone Touch ID setup could not complete: why your fingerprint won’t register

The “Touch ID setup could not be completed” message appears while registering a fingerprint. It is usually caused by a damp or dirty finger or button, a case covering the button or an unfinished registration. Delete your saved fingerprints and add them again; if the button was replaced or is damaged, see below.

02Step by step

  1. Restart.
  2. Delete fingerprints. Under Settings › Touch ID & Passcode, delete the saved fingerprints and add them again.
  3. Update iOS. Settings › General › Software Update.
  4. Try another finger. If registration fails with another finger too, the button is the likely cause.

03When is it hardware?

If the button has been replaced before, the problem started after a screen replacement or there was liquid contact, the problem may be hardware.
