iPhone not recording audio: causes and fixes

If your iPhone will not record audio or recordings are silent, first turn off Bluetooth, remove the case and restart. Full storage can stop recording from starting. If another app is affected, check its microphone permission. If Voice Memos is silent too, the bottom microphone should be checked.

  1. Bluetooth. If a headset is connected, it records instead; turn Bluetooth off.
  2. Case. Remove a case that covers the bottom microphone.
  3. Storage. Free up space in Settings › General › iPhone Storage.
  4. Permission. Turn on the app’s permission in Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.
  5. Restart and update.
