iPhone sound problems after an update: how to fix them

Losing or reduced sound on an iPhone after an update usually comes from a changed setting, a Bluetooth connection or an incomplete update. Check the settings in order; if the problem started at the same time as the update, a hardware fault is unlikely.

01Step-by-step fix

  1. Check the volume. Play a video and raise the volume with the buttons; the volume indicator should appear.
  2. Check silent mode and Focus. The ring / silent switch or Action button, and Focus in Control Centre.
  3. Turn off Bluetooth. After an update the phone may have connected to earphones or a car automatically.
  4. Choose the audio output. In Control Centre, use the audio output icon on the music tile to select iPhone.
  5. Restart. Temporary glitches after an update clear.
  6. Check for updates. Settings › General › Software Update; point updates can fix bugs.
  7. Reset All Settings. Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings.
