iPhone weak signal: why it drops and how to fix it

If your iPhone shows few signal bars, calls drop or there is no signal indoors, the phone is not always at fault. First remove the case, try another SIM and check for a carrier settings update. If it started after a drop, the antenna connection may be damaged.

02What you can try at home

  1. Remove the case. Cases with metal parts or very thick cases can weaken the antenna.
  2. Airplane mode. Turn it on and off after a few seconds; the phone reconnects to the network.
  3. Carrier settings. If an update is available under Settings › General › About, an alert appears; install it.
  4. Voice & Data. Under Settings › Cellular, switch between LTE and 5G and try again.
  5. Wi-Fi Calling. If signal is weak at home and your carrier supports it, calls over Wi-Fi can be turned on.

Menu names can differ slightly by iOS version.

03When is it a hardware fault?

If the signal problem began after a drop or liquid contact, is the same with another SIM and the settings did not help, the antenna cable or the network IC may be faulty. For no signal at all, see iPhone no service fix; for network faults on the board, our IC chip repair page.
