iPhone X screen replacement and Face ID: what to watch for

01What does Face ID have to do with the screen?

Face ID’s main parts are in the TrueDepth camera system at the top of the phone. On the iPhone X, the earpiece (top speaker) cable attached to the screen also carries sensors that support this system. When the screen is replaced, this cable is removed from the old screen and fitted to the new one; it is delicate work, and if the cable is damaged, Face ID will not work.

02How is the replacement done?

  1. Pre-check. Face ID, the proximity sensor and the front camera are tested before the replacement; any existing problems are reported to you.
  2. Approval. The screen options and price are sent; nothing is done without your approval.
  3. Transfer. The earpiece cable and its sensors are carefully moved to the new screen.
  4. Test. Face ID, touch, colours and the proximity sensor are tested.

03True Tone and the information message

After a screen replacement, whether True Tone works depends on the model and part; it is discussed at diagnosis. On the iPhone X, a screen Apple does not recognise may show an information message in Settings; the screen works normally.
