Liquid or moisture in your phone: steam, fogging and warnings

Not only spilled water but also bathroom steam and condensation can get into a phone. A fogged camera, a moisture warning at the charging port or sound cutting in and out are signs of moisture. Leave the phone somewhere dry and airy and do not charge it; if the signs continue, have it checked.

01Where does moisture get in?

  • Bathroom steam: Leaving the phone in the bathroom during a shower lets steam in through the openings.
  • Condensation: Coming from the cold outside into a warm room can form droplets inside the phone.
  • Rain and sweat: A phone left in a wet pocket for a long time takes on moisture.
  • Old seals: Water resistance weakens over time, after drops or previous repairs.

03What to do

  1. Unplug it. Do not charge by cable while there is moisture.
  2. Dry, airy place. Leave the phone without its case at room temperature somewhere airy.
  3. No heat. A heater, the sun or a hair dryer can damage the seals and the screen.
  4. Watch the signs. If fogging and warnings do not clear, have it checked before corrosion starts.
