Phone dropped in the sea: how is it repaired? The effect of salt and sand

Sea water is more harmful than fresh water: its salt speeds up corrosion on the board and leaves residue even after the phone dries. Switch off a phone that fell in the sea, do not charge it, and get it to a repair shop as soon as possible, before the salt crystallises.

01Why is sea water more harmful?

Sea water and sand can harm the seals even on water-resistant phones; water resistance is not designed for salt water.

02First steps on the beach

  1. Get it out. Take the phone out of the water and remove the case.
  2. Switch it off. If it is on, switch it off; do not try to turn it on.
  3. Dry it. Wipe the outside with a soft cloth; shake off the sand.
  4. Do not charge. Plugging a cable into a salty, sandy port can cause a short circuit.
  5. Do not wait. Get it to a repair shop as soon as possible, before the salt crystallises.

03What happens during the repair?

At the free diagnosis the phone is opened and the areas reached by salt and sand are checked. The board and connections are cleaned, and affected parts (charging port, speaker, screen) are tested separately. Whether a repair is possible and its risk are explained; nothing is done without your approval.
