Phone not charging after getting wet: what to do

If your phone will not charge after getting wet, moisture may still be in the port or the contacts may be starting to oxidise. Trying to charge with a wet port can make the fault worse. First turn the phone off and let the port dry; if the problem continues, the port and board should be checked.

Key points
  • Do not charge a wet phone; the risk of short circuits and oxidation rises.
  • Turn the phone off, gently shake it with the port facing down and leave it to dry somewhere airy.
  • Burying it in rice does not draw out moisture and can leave dust and starch in the port.
  • Some phones stop charging when they detect moisture in the port; this is a protection feature.
  • If it still will not charge once dry, the port or board is oxidised.

01What to do first

  1. Unplug it and turn it off. Current through a wet port can cause a short circuit.
  2. Dry the outside. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth; remove the case and the SIM tray.
  3. Point the port down. Gently shake the phone so water drains from the port.
  4. Leave it somewhere airy. Wait for the port to dry completely.
  5. Try once it is dry. Try charging with a good cable and adapter.

02What does the moisture warning mean?

Some phones show a warning and stop wired charging when they detect moisture in the charging port. This protects the phone. Once the port dries, the warning goes away by itself. If the port is dry but the warning stays, there may be oxidation or dirt in the port.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

How long should I wait before charging a phone that got wet?

Do not charge it until the port is completely dry. If it still will not charge once dry, have the port checked.

02

Does the rice method work?

No. Rice does not draw out moisture effectively and can leave dust in the port. Drying it somewhere airy is better.

03

Can data be recovered from a phone that got wet?

In most cases, yes. With early action, a board-level repair gets the phone working and the data is usually kept.

04

Why does a moisture warning appear?

The phone warns you when it detects liquid in the charging port. Let the port dry and do not charge with a cable until the warning goes away.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
