Phone screen flickering and grainy: how to fix it

Flickering, shimmering or a grainy picture usually means the display panel or its connection is damaged. But software, the charger or the brightness setting can cause similar symptoms. The screenshot test quickly tells you where the problem is.

01Causes of flickering

  • Panel damage. A drop or pressure damages the screen’s inner layers.
  • A loose connection. If the screen connector has moved, the picture can flicker.
  • Charger. Poor-quality or faulty adapters can cause interference on the screen.
  • Software. An update or an app can cause a display glitch.
  • Liquid. Moisture oxidises the connections.

02Step-by-step checks

  1. Take a screenshot. Open it on another device; if the image looks clean, the panel is at fault.
  2. Unplug the charger. If it only happens while charging, try another adapter and cable.
  3. Change the brightness. Turn off auto-brightness and watch at different levels.
  4. Restart and update.
  5. Try Safe Mode (Android). If it stops in Safe Mode, an app may be the cause.

Will screen flickering go away by itself?

If it is software, a restart or update may fix it. If it comes from panel damage, it does not go away; the screen must be replaced.

What if the flicker also shows in screenshots?

The problem is most likely software. Restart and update the phone, and try Safe Mode.

Will a screen replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

What if the grain only appears at low brightness?

Some OLED screens show flicker or grain at low brightness; if it disappears when you raise the brightness, it is usually not a panel fault.
