Front glass, touch layer and LCD: what is the difference?

A phone screen has three layers: the front glass on top, the touch layer below it and the display panel (LCD or OLED) at the bottom. On most phones these layers are bonded together. If only the glass is cracked, a panel with new glass may be an option; if touch or picture fails, the screen is replaced.
