Why does a phone screen press by itself?

If the screen opens apps, types or scrolls without you touching it, this is called “ghost touch”. The cause is usually something simple like a screen protector, dirt or the charger; but if the touch layer is damaged, the screen needs replacing.

01Why does a phone open things by itself?

  • Screen protector. A protector with a lifted edge or dust and air underneath can register as a touch.
  • Dirt and moisture. Grease, water drops or sweat on the screen confuse the touch layer.
  • Charger. Poor-quality or faulty adapters and cables can cause electrical noise on the screen.
  • Software. A bug in an app or after an update can make touch respond wrongly.
  • Hardware. A drop, pressure or liquid can damage the touch layer or its connection.

02Step-by-step fix

  1. Remove the protector and clean the screen. Use a dry, soft cloth; do not spray liquid on the screen.
  2. Unplug the charger. If it only happens while charging, try another adapter and cable.
  3. Restart the phone. Temporary software glitches are often fixed this way.
  4. Try Safe Mode. On Android, if the problem stops in Safe Mode, an app you installed is the cause; remove recent apps first.
  5. Update the software. Install any pending system update.
  6. Last resort: reset. If you are sure it is software, back up and consider a factory reset.

03When is a screen replacement needed?

If the problem always happens in one area, the screen is cracked, or it started after a drop or liquid contact, the touch layer is most likely damaged. A screen replacement is then needed; data is usually preserved during the repair, but back up your data first.
