- On iPhone, turn off Greyscale in Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Colour Filters.
- On Android, bedtime mode can turn the screen grey; check Digital Wellbeing.
- Extreme power saving can also make the screen black and white.
- On Android, “Simulate colour space” in developer options should be off.
- If a screenshot is in colour but the screen is grey, the panel may be at fault.
01If your iPhone screen is black and white
- Turn off colour filters. Go to Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Colour Filters; if Colour Filters or Greyscale is on, turn it off.
- Check the accessibility shortcut. If triple-clicking the side button turns the filter on and off, a colour filter is assigned to the shortcut; remove it in Settings › Accessibility › Accessibility Shortcut.
- Check Focus modes. Some focus settings change how the screen looks; turn off any active focus and test.
02If your Android screen is black and white
- Turn off bedtime mode. In Settings › Digital Wellbeing, turn off any mode that uses greyscale.
- Turn off power saving. Extreme or maximum power saving in Settings › Battery can make the screen black and white.
- Check accessibility colour settings. Turn off colour correction, colour filters or greyscale if they are on.
- Check developer options. If enabled, set “Simulate colour space” to “Disabled”.
- Try Safe Mode. If colours return in Safe Mode, an app is changing the screen.
Menu names vary by brand and software version; typing “grey” or “colour” into the settings search helps.

04If the screen is faulty
If the settings are normal and screenshots are in colour but the screen shows no colour or faded colours, the panel may be damaged; a screen replacement is then needed; data is usually preserved during the repair, but back up your data first. Choose your model on our Samsung models or iPhone models page, or read about lines on the phone screen.
