Phone dropped and will not turn on: what should you do?

A phone whose screen goes black after a drop is not always off; often it is on but the screen or its connection is damaged. First find out whether the phone is on, then try charging and a force restart.

01Is the phone on?

  1. Call the phone. If it rings or vibrates, it is on.
  2. Plug it in. A charging sound or vibration means it is working.
  3. Connect it to a computer. If the computer recognises it, it is on.

If the phone is on but the screen is black, the screen or its connection is the problem. See phone works but screen is black.

02If there is no response at all

  1. Charge it and wait. Charge it for a while with a good cable and adapter.
  2. Force restart. iPhone 8 and later: volume up, volume down, then hold the side button; on Samsung, hold the side key and volume down together.
  3. Try another adapter. The charger may be the problem.
