Selling a broken phone: what to know before you sell

Phones that will not turn on, had liquid contact or have a faulty part can be sold too; the offer depends on the fault and the device’s overall condition. Before selling, get your data off and sign out of your accounts. Ask for the repair price too and compare; you can get an offer from our own site, Telefon Sat.

01Which broken phones can be sold?

A broken phone’s value depends on the parts that still work and how extensive the repair would be. The offer is made once the device has been seen.

FaultAssessment
Will not turn onWhether the fault is on the board or another part matters
Liquid contactHow much the board is affected is checked
Not chargingOften the port or an IC
Camera or Face ID (iPhone) faultyWhether the part can be repaired affects the offer

Selling a phone with a cracked screen is covered separately in where to sell a phone with a cracked screen.

02What to do before selling

  1. Get your data. If the phone turns on, back up to the cloud or a computer.
  2. Sign out of accounts. Sign out of your Apple Account on iPhone and your Google account on Android. If the phone will not turn on, remove it from your account remotely.
  3. Remove the SIM and memory card.
  4. Sell with paperwork. Have your ID and the invoice, if any, ready.

03Repair or sell?

If the fault is in a single part (for example the charging port, battery or camera), a repair is often the way to keep using the phone. With board faults, compare the risk and price of the repair with the sale offer. How board faults are assessed is explained on our motherboard repair page. Cep Market, Teknoway and Telefon Sat are the same company; you can get a sale offer through Telefon Sat.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Can a phone that will not turn on be sold?

Yes. The offer depends on where the fault is and the condition of the other parts.

02

Can a phone with an account lock be sold?

A phone still signed in cannot be used by its new owner. Sign out of your account or remove the device remotely before selling.

03

Should I ask for the repair price before selling?

Yes. For single-part faults a repair may make more sense; compare the two figures and decide.

04

Will the repair delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
