Sound from only one side of your headphones: check the balance first

If one side of your headphones is silent, check the phone’s audio balance setting first: the slider may have moved to one side. Then try the headphones on another device. If the problem follows the headphones, they are faulty; if not, the phone’s port or setting is the cause.

011. Audio balance setting

  • iPhone: Centre the Balance slider under Settings › Accessibility › Audio & Visual.
  • Android: Centre the audio balance or left / right balance setting under Settings › Accessibility.
  • Mono audio: When on, both sides play the same sound; turn it off and test if one side is the issue.

Menu names can differ slightly by version and manufacturer.

033. Adapter and port

If you use an adapter, swap it; an incompatible adapter can cut one channel. Lint in the port stops the plug seating fully; clean it gently with a wooden toothpick.
