How to turn off and restart a phone with a non-removable battery

When a phone with a non-removable battery freezes or the screen stops responding, a button combination can force it to restart. If the phone had liquid contact or overheated, the goal is to turn it off and not charge it.

01When is a force restart needed?

A force restart is used when the screen freezes, touch does not respond or you cannot open the power-off menu. It does not delete your data; it only restarts the phone.

02On iPhone

  1. Force restart (iPhone 8 and later). Press and quickly release volume up, press and quickly release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. Turn off (iPhones with Face ID). Hold the side button and a volume button together; drag the slider that appears.
  3. Turn off (iPhones with a Home button). Hold the side or top button; drag the slider.

03On Samsung and other Android phones

  1. Force restart (Samsung). Hold the side key and volume down together until the phone turns off and restarts.
  2. Turn off. Briefly press the side key and volume down to open the menu and choose Power off, or use the power icon in quick settings.
  3. Other brands. On most Android phones, holding the power button for a long time forces a restart; the combination varies by brand.
