How to turn a frozen phone off and on: frozen or switched off?

The way to turn a frozen phone off and on is a force restart with a button combination; but first make sure it is really frozen. If it rings when called or vibrates when plugged in, the phone is on and the screen has frozen. If freezing returns after a restart, check storage, updates and recent apps.

  • If it rings when called, the phone is on.

  • If it keeps happening, check storage and updates.
  • Safe mode shows freezing caused by an app.

The force restart button combinations are in turn off a phone with a non-removable battery.

02Keep it from freezing again

  1. Free up storage. Full storage slows the phone and can freeze it.
  2. Install updates. System and app updates fix bugs.
  3. Check the latest app. If freezing began after an app, remove it and try.
  4. Try safe mode. On Android, if it does not freeze in safe mode, an app is the trigger.
  5. Cut down home screen widgets. Many live widgets and moving wallpapers add load.

03When is it hardware?

If freezing continues on a clean system, happens when the phone gets hot or began after a drop, the hardware should be checked. If the screen stays dark, see phone dark screen problem.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
