- A swap means the faulty device was exchanged for another at the manufacturer’s service.
- A replacement device has a different serial number from the box.
- A replacement device is not faulty in itself.
- When buying used, compare the service paperwork and serial numbers.
- Replacement devices can be repaired too; diagnosis is free.
01How to tell a swap device
- Compare serial numbers. Compare the serial number in Settings › General › About on iPhone, or Settings › About phone on Android, with the box (menu names vary by brand).
- Check the service paperwork. A swap is written in the service record.
- Check parts history. On iPhone, Parts and Service History may give information.
- Ask the seller. Ask in writing whether the device is a replacement.
