AMOLED screen shading: burn-in or low-brightness shadow?

“Shading” on an AMOLED screen can mean three different things: the permanent ghost left by an image that stayed still for a long time, an uneven shadow seen on grey at low brightness, and a green or pink tint in part of the screen. A grey screen test tells them apart.

Cep Market Repair TeamIn Kadıköy since 2006
Key points
  • Shading can be burn-in, a low-brightness shadow or a colour tint.
  • Open a grey image at different brightness levels to tell them apart.
  • Burn-in builds up over time and does not go away.
  • Slight unevenness at low brightness is often not a fault.
  • Dark mode and a short screen timeout delay burn-in.

01Grey screen test

  1. Open a plain grey image. Show it full screen with notifications off.
  2. Turn brightness to maximum. If the keyboard, status bar or button ghosts show, it is burn-in.
  3. Turn brightness to minimum. A faint wavy shadow appearing only now is often a natural limit of OLED.
  4. Open a white image. A green or pink tint in one area may mean a panel fault.

02Three kinds of shading

TypeHow it looksWhat to do
Burn-inFaint ghost of fixed elementsDoes not go; replace the screen if it bothers you
Low-brightness shadowUnevenness on grey only in the darkOften not a fault
Colour tintGreen or pink in one areaThe panel is checked

How image retention forms is explained in image retention and burn-in on phone screens.

03To delay burn-in

  • Use dark mode.
  • Keep the screen timeout short.
  • Use gestures instead of navigation buttons if you can.
  • Do not leave a still image at full brightness for long.

If burn-in bothers you, the fix is a screen replacement; the options are on our screen replacement page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Will burn-in on an AMOLED screen go away?

Permanent burn-in does not. Temporary image retention can fade once the screen shows other content for a while.

02

I see a shadow on grey at low brightness; is it a fault?

Slight unevenness only at very low brightness is often a natural limit of OLED; if it disappears as brightness rises, it is not a fault.

03

Part of my screen looks green. What should I do?

This may be a panel fault; it is checked at the free diagnosis.

04

Will a screen replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
