Ghost image on the phone screen: retention or burn-in?

If a faint trace of the previous image stays on the screen, it is either temporary image retention or permanent burn-in. Retention fades after a while; burn-in on OLED screens, caused by the same image staying on screen for long, is permanent. Lower brightness, a shorter timeout and dark mode help prevent it.

  1. Brightness. Turn on Auto-Brightness; do not leave it at maximum for long.
  2. Timeout. Shorten the time before the screen turns off by itself.
  3. Dark mode. It reduces bright static elements.
  4. Static images. Do not leave paused navigation or video on screen for long.
